Overview

This module will provide students with the theoretical knowledge regarding elements of the management of diabetes-related foot disease that will underpin the development of their clinical practice and clinical skills.

Module content is structured around the following key themes:

• Epidemiology and pathophysiology of diabetes/ diabetes-related foot disease

• Assessment of the diabetic foot (vascular, neurological, musculoskeletal)

• Psychosocial issues associated with diabetes-related foot disease • Healthcare disparities and prevention of diabetes-related foot disease

• Risk assessment and classification systems

• Wound healing and holistic assessment

• Managing Diabetic Foot Ulcers

• Diabetic Foot Infections

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be 21 years of age.  Honours degree or higher diploma (level 8) ideally in a relevant healthcare field, if no level 8 must demonstrate that they have successfully completed (in previous two-years) a module at Masters level (level 9). We also require professional registration with a regulatory body i.e. CORU or NMBI for entry onto the module.

What you will Learn

  • Critically analyse research and evidence underpinning the multi-professional management of manifestations of diabetes in the lower limb and foot.
  • Appraise relevant policy and position documents relating to management of diabetes in the lower limb and foot.
  • Formulate problem-solving strategies that relate to assessment, diagnosis and treatment options for people with diabetic foot disease.
  • Evaluative and explore areas of uncertainty, ambiguity, limitations of knowledge and current innovations in managing people with diabetic foot disease.

Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at postgraduate level 9.
